Where Your Treasure Is There Your Heart Will Be Also

Reflection

Jesus encourages his followers not to prioritize material wealth and possessions, which are temporary and vulnerable to loss or destruction. Instead, he advises them to focus on accumulating spiritual treasures or virtues with eternal value. The passage also speaks metaphorically about the eye as the body’s lamp, suggesting that one’s perception and focus should be on what is good and righteous rather than being clouded by darkness or unhealthy desires.

19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.

23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!

~ Matthew 6:19 -23 (KJV)

Our week’s challenge

If your heart is aligned with treasures that are of eternal value, may you graciously extend your blessings to those in need. Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, offer water to the thirsty, tend to the sick, and provide shelter for the homeless. In the name of Jesus, let compassion guide your actions, and may your generosity bring hope and comfort to less fortunate people.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus, we humbly come before You with hearts open to receive Your wisdom and guidance. As we reflect on the profound message found in the Bible passage, Matthew 6:19-23, we seek Your transformative power to turn our lives towards what truly matters—the eternal treasures.

Father in Heaven, grant us the discernment to recognize the fleeting nature of earthly possessions and the allure of material wealth. Help us understand that true treasures lie in the spiritual realm, in acts of kindness, compassion, and love. Open our eyes to the needs of those around us so that we may be vessels of Your grace and provision.

In the name of Jesus, we command the spirit of selfishness and greed to be cast away from our hearts. Replace it with a deep desire to serve and bless others, especially the marginalized and vulnerable. May we be instruments of Your peace, oh Heavenly Father, offering sustenance to the hungry, clothing to the naked, water to the thirsty, care to the sick, and shelter to the homeless.

Father in Heaven, ignite within us a passion for eternal treasures, the growth of our relationship with You, and the expansion of Your Kingdom on earth. May our lives be a living testament to Your love and grace. Help us prioritize spiritual richness above material gain, knowing that where our treasure is, there our hearts will be also.

We pray that this prayer stirs hearts and awakens spirits to the eternal truths found in Your Word. May it inspire a profound transformation in the lives of those who hear it, leading them to embrace the values of the Kingdom and pursue eternal treasures above all else.

In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
